Sílica porosa

Uma equipe britânica desenvolveu uma nova estratégia para fabricar catalisadores que poderá impactar fortemente não apenas a indústria química, mas também a geração de energia e até aplicações na área de saúde.

Catalisadores são substâncias que aceleram as reações químicas, “orientando” os átomos e moléculas por vias específicas, a fim de formar produtos úteis.

Os novos materiais catalíticos se auto-organizam – um processo conhecido como “de baixo para cima” – a partir de ingredientes químicos de baixo custo cujo principal componente é a sílica, ou óxido de silício.

O material resultante possui uma estrutura porosa tridimensional com uma complexidade comparável à dos melhores materiais porosos encontrados na natureza.

Mas o principal é que o processo permite alocar criteriosamente os átomos dos caríssimos paládio e platina – os melhores catalisadores disponíveis – dentro da arquitetura de sílica.

Catalisador bimetálico

Com a deposição seletiva dos catalisadores, torna-se possível usar uma quantidade muito menor desses metais preciosos. E esse catalisador bimetálico opera em condições amenas, reduzindo a necessidade de compostos agressivos.

Como o material poroso possui uma enorme área superficial – a soma das superfícies de todos os seus poros – o contato dos materiais sendo processados com os catalisadores é otimizado, acelerando as reações.

Mais do que isso, a hierarquia dos poros permite um controle estrito das reações. Ao entrar no material poroso, os ingredientes químicos primeiro vão para o catalisador de paládio, para formar um produto A, por exemplo. A seguir, eles fluem pelos mesoporos interligados para chegar até o catalisador de platina, para formar um produto B. E não há reações indesejadas porque a natureza hierárquica dos mesoporos impede que o produto B retorne pelos canais usados para gerar o produto A.

“Esperamos que esta pesquisa tenha um impacto amplo e duradouro na forma como os materiais porosos são sintetizados e aplicados em diversas indústrias. Em particular, a nossa nova estratégia poderá revolucionar a forma comocatalisadores heterogêneos, tais como aqueles encontrados nos modernosconversores catalíticos automotivos, são projetados, oferecendo enormes benefícios potenciais em termos de custos de fabricação de produtos químicos, aplicações ambientais e de saúde,” disse o professor Adam Lee, da Universidade de Aston.
